Apple iBooks Author is a new content creation tool by Apple. It’s free and targeted at textbooks for students and pupils, but a quick glance of the software reveals you can just as easily use it for iPad books — anything but novels, really. Yes, you can, but can you sell your book too?
If you use iBooks Author and want to charge for a book, here is what the license agreement starts with in fat, bold text:
“If you charge a fee for any book or other work you generate using this software (a “Work”), you may only sell or distribute such Work through Apple (e.g., through the iBookstore) and such distribution will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple.”
Only if you distribute a book created with iBooks Author for free, are you allowed to distribute it via other channels, say your own web site. How’s that for a restriction?
